Introduction

Welcome to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization UNIDO Ready-For-E-Business-Tool!

Before you create an e-procurement system for your company, be sure to assess your readiness to electronically integrate into supply chains. Look into all operations and activities of your enterprise, as e-procurement processes have implications for the entire company. While the system is being implemented throughout your company, it is important to regularly review the company's adaptation process in order to quickly identify personal or technical problems.

Using an e-procurement should help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of your employees and the overall performance of your company. It is important to note that e-procurement systems do not necessarily result in reduced numbers of employees but rather smarter, more efficient, more technologically savvy, and employees with redefined responsibilities.

When you begin to develop an e-procurement strategy and implement its related activities, remember three main objectives of any e-procurement activities:

§Find new clients for your company
§Improve your profitability through use of technology
§Maintain and response to your current clients and their needs

The Ready-For-E-Business-Tool is intended to provide you with important “need to know” information to achieve these goals and to assess how ready your company is to conduct procurement using the Internet and other information and communications technology (ICT).

Conducting an “e-procurement readiness assessment” of your company will allow you to understand the main types of e-procurement systems, benefits and risks of online selling and buying, and various options you can select so that you can successfully implement online buying and selling systems using the Internet and ICT.

The assessment of your readiness to enter successfully in the Internet world is divided in four main parts, following the typical process of e-procurement in a small or medium-sized company:

Assessment of your e-procurement strategy

Assessment of the planning and preparation of your e-procurement activities

Assessment of the implementation of your e-procurement activities

Assessment of your evaluation systems and monitoring of your e-procurement activities

Quick results on this self-assessment are simple to obtain. The questions are structured in a way that allows you to agree (answer: “yes”) or disagree (answer: “no”) to them. The more questions you answer affirmatively, the better you are prepared. In order to obtain a comprehensive assessment, kindly complete the “Feedback Sheet” and send it back.

The UNIDO Programme will provide you with a complete assessment on your e-readiness and will show you how to begin.

By being aware of the latest developments in e-procurement systems, processes, and procedures, you will be better prepared to make informed decisions if you decide to implement an e-procurement strategy.  You will also be able to determine which strategy is likely the best “fit” for your company.

After all, successful e-procurement is a matter of first identifying the strategy and then using the appropriate technology available to you.
